Jeonju, Notes from Sanda, 2025

On the night before inviting a guest into my home, I would always clean the house from top to bottom. I swept and wiped the large room, the small room, the bathroom, and the kitchen, one after another. I organized the items on the shelves and hung fresh towels. Lastly, I placed the slippers neatly near the threshold of the front door. Only after looking over the house once more would I fall asleep, waiting for the guest who would come the next day. As I followed Sanda’s tidy courtyard, the scent at the entrance, music and a letter, tea and teaware, warm running water and foam, soft towels, lights, and the view beyond the window, I could sense the movement through the space and the care of someone’s hands.

I was reminded of the time I had spent cleaning the night before welcoming a guest. I thought this scene was possible because of someone’s careful time spent sweeping the yard in advance, lighting incense, preparing tea and teaware, and polishing the windows clear. It resembles a room that was neatly arranged when I once came home, or a breakfast that had been set out after I woke up late. Some scenes sustain a person for a very long time. They fill what is empty and help us recover. On days when I feel as though I have nothing and have received nothing, they make me remember that I once received something like this. In November, when I was invited to Sanda and traveled to Jeonju, I yawned widely and stretched often in that comfort.

I soaked in the bathtub, came out and drank tea.
